Ocean Palace is the third level of World 3, and the first fortress introduced in the game (second in earlier demos). There are two bosses.

Level overview[]

The level starts with an underwater section. Dodge the Torpedo Teds and proceed right until you find a wavy castle. Set the On-Off Switch to off and enter the ruins.

You'll find the ruins within to be vacant and lifeless. Head right to find an On-Off Switch. Turn it on, and the lifts will become active, while the Bowser Statues will start to attack.

Head left, using the lifts to help you get to the top of the stage. Go in the nearby door to fight the Mammon Machine.

After fighting the Mammon Machine you'll find yourself next to a P-Switch. Grab it and take it to the stack of blocks under the start of the ruins to reach the boss door. Inside, you'll face against Kaptain K. Rool.

Dragon Coins[]

All Dragon Coins appear just outside of the boss door.

Asset Sources[]

Graphics[]

In the outside section, the foreground is from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, while the fort's entrance graphics and the foreground within it are from the pyramid stages from the All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 2.

The Mammon Machine's water attack uses the waterfall graphics from the All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 3.

Kaptain K. Rool's arena uses the Krocodile Kore background from Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong-Quest.

Music[]

The music used throughout the underwater part is Boundaries from Romancing SaGa 3.

The music used within the ruins while they're inactive is Leonid's Castle from Romancing SaGa 3. After you turn the On-Off Switch on, the music changes to the castle theme from Super Mario World (the ASM coding hasn't been changed since before the custom music was put in, most likely).

The battle with the Mammon Machine uses The Decisive Battle from Final Fantasy VI, and the battle with Kaptain K. Rool uses Boss Bossanova from Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest.

Trivia[]

  • This level is a reference to the Ocean Palace from Chrono Trigger, as evidenced by the name and the Mammon Machine battle.
  • This the only fortress in the game which the player starts outside of it. All others feature Mario entering them right before the level begins.
