Keep Holding Your Breath is the fourth level in the Grassland and the first water level in the hack.

It has a secret exit that leads to the Grassland Star.

Level Overview[]

It's your average water level, but with an HDMA gradient. The level is quite linear, so finding your way out isn't too tough. Simply follow the path and make sure to dodge the seafood special.

In the middle of the level, you'll come a pipe to a hidden room with a box containing a coin trail. Near said pipe in the main stage is a P Switch. Use the P Switch and lead the coin trail to the upper left (the upper right only has a box with a coin in it) to reach a Spade Game.

The game, if you've played Super Mario Bros. 3, is a minigame in which you try to stop the slot reels to create a picture of a Super Mushroom, Fire Flower or Starman. Depending on which you got, you can get up to five lives.

This level is the first one to have a secret exit in the hack. If you pay close attention, you'll notice that the goal tape is higher up than usual, meaning you can sneak under it.

Defeat the Whistlin' Chuck guarding the pathway below the goal tape, and head onwards. You'll be transported to another part of the level, with a goal tape (and a bunch of Porcu-Puffers and Torpedo Teds, watch out).

The DK Coin (demoOnly1 only)[]

In demoOnly1, the Spade Game room has no Coin Trail box. Instead, a lone DK Coin can be found in the left half of the room.

Dragon Coins[]

  1. At the bottom of the part where the path leads up, underneath the small row of three coins at the start of the stage.
  2. At the part with a floating platform, surrounded by two Urchins, look underneath it.
  3. Under the entry pipe for the cave room.
  4. Left of the pipe where you'd end up in if you left the hidden room.
  5. To the right of said pipe, right before the exit.

Asset Sources[]

Graphics[]

This level uses the cave graphics from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and the underwater background from Super Mario World in the majority of the level.

As for the cave area, it uses the ice background from Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and the graphics of Crystal Snail's stage from Mega Man X2.

The Spade Game uses graphics from the All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 3.

Music[]

The custom music used in most of the level is Boundaries from Romancing SaGa 3.

The cave area uses Horrible Shadow from Romancing SaGa.

The Spade Game uses Go Red Team! Go White Team! Rah Rah Rah! from Treasure Hunter G.
